The films I watch over and over all tend to be gangster films. Top 10 would be: Godfather 1 and II Goodfellas Scarface Millers Crossing Mean Streets The Departed Performance Long Good Friday Once Upon a Time in America
The one I've watched most is probably Mean Streets. First saw it aged 14 and must have seen it dozens of times since.

Yeah, there's plenty to choose from, I go by what films I can watch over and over as my gauge but those would not make any 'best ever' list for those more into their films. Things like the Jason Bourne series of films and The Sting, Scarface is always a good watch, as are many that have been mentioned on here.

I think it also depends on whether you base it on artistical brilliance or if it is enjoyable. I thought for instance The Godfather is a brilliant bit of film making but I was bored watching it. My preference with De Niro/Pacino is Heat but obviously it wasn't as good a bit of film making than The Godfather was.
I'd rather watch Dirty Harry, Jaws, Back to the Future or Star Trek The Voyage Home than most of the Oscar Winning Films of the last few years for instance.

Difficult to name a favourite, but some of the films I most enjoy watching are as follows:
On the Waterfront (1954) Zulu (1963) A Man for All Seasons (1966) The Graduate (1967) 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) Midnight Cowboy (1969) A Clockwork Orange (1971) The Godfather (1972) The Godfather Part Two (1974) One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) Dog Day Afternoon (1975) Monty Python's The Holy Grail (1975) Monty Python's The Life of Brian (1979) The Elephant Man (1980) Gladiator (2000)
Modern films are generally shit by comparison to these classics.

There was a really good space film in 1992, but I can't for the life of me remember the name of it.

My only claim to fame is that my wife's three cousins, Leslie, Cathy and Elizabeth are in this film. They are playing around the fire hydrant when Sonny comes by to beat the shit out of Carlo. As you were.
